.ME Domains Strict Rules Causing Pain
Sunday, 20 July 2008 02:08

me.pngSome people jumped into the .ME rush without reading the rules (don't feel bad, I did the same thing). .ME domains were released with different rules and regulations then most domains you are used to buying and if you don't know about it, you might feel the pinch soon. First of all, .me domains CANNOT be refunded like most domains can. The .me registry is not issuing refunds for any .me that was actually purchased (this excludes pre-registration bids that you lost). Many people started snatching up domains on Thursday then went over their list and started canceling domains they did not want to keep anticipating a refund, only to call into various registries and be told that .me's would not allow refunds. This rule is the same across all registrars, so don't think its just a few being stingy. Second big thing you might have noticed is that 3 letter .me domains are nowhere to be found. Those all went to a special auction instead of being released to the public. Last, but not least (well yes, least because this one isn't all that new) is the fact that .me domains cannot be registered for less than one year at a time. Don't let all of this stop you from snatching up those great .me domains, but do spend a few more minutes thinking about it before you get stuck with something you might not really want.

News for nerds, stuff that matters
  • Microsoft To Offer Free Anti-Virus Software
Dynamoo writes "The good news is that Microsoft have announced free anti-virus software for consumers, dubbed Morro, available late next year. The bad news is... well, exactly the same. Although Microsoft's anti-malware products are pretty good, this move could drive many competitors out of business and create a dangerous security monoculture; major rivals will be lawyering up already. On the other hand, many malware infections could be prevented even by basic software. So is this going to be a good or bad thing overall?"

  • iPhone applications for the Linux user

The iPhone and iPod Touch haven taken the mobile market by storm. Apple's AppStore is full of interesting applications that take advantage of the two devices's capabilities. But what's in there for Linux users? Sadly, GTKPod and Amarok cannot yet transfer files on an iPhone with the 2.x firmware upgrade, but there are other interesting ways your iPhone can interact with your Linux desktop and even servers.
